肩にチップがあるということは、何かを不公平と思って根に持っている、憤慨した態度だということです。チップとは木片のことで、恐らく船大工が持ち帰っていいとされた残った木材のことでしょう。

 

We say someone has a chip on his shoulder if he is holding a grudge or have a resentful attitude, because he thinks something was unfair. The “chip” refers to a woodchip, probably a piece of leftover wood that shipwrights were allowed to take home with them.
